Truthfully, it's a long way from being a studio, but it's cleaned up and I have this sweet table made out of stuff we already had- an old hollow core door and the legs to Gramma Martha's dining room table.
Fourteen years ago, this space upstairs in the barn was the inspiration for buying our house. At least it was for me. It was hard to see beyond the mess that was the interior of the house, but somehow perfectly clear to me that this attic space with big beautiful windows at either end was the ideal new home for my graphic design business.
But, over the last 14 years there has always been something else that we needed to spend money on that was more important than renovating this space. There still is I suppose... But for now, with a little elbow grease and a lot of determination I've carved out a creative sanctuary that I can escape to during the warmer months. And that's just enough to keep the dream alive.
Here's some advice from a wreckless optimist on how to keep your dream alive: Think small. That's right, small. We're used to hearing "think big". But often that "think big" mentality can be a little intimidating. Example: regarding my "new studio". Think big= insulate, outdoor staircase with entry from second story deck and sliding doors, re-wire and finish off space with awesome lighting and furniture. That sounds pretty intimidating, not to mention expensive.
Think small= get rid of the junk, sweep it up and make a table. Done.
